AVEIRO DISTRICT  is situated in the central coastal region of Portugal.

AVEIRO District  borders to the north to Porto District, to the east to Viseu District, to the south to Coimbra District and to the west to the Atlantic Ocean.

The District of Aveiro is composed by 19 Municipalities, among them, Albergaria-a-Velha, Sever do Vouga, Estarreja, Águeda, Santa Maria da Feira.

The capital of this District is the city of Aveiro.

Aveiro means a place full with birds, meaning that this area has been chosen all over the centuries by a large community of birds to live in.

Located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, Aveiro is an outstanding industrial city with an important seaport, modern railways and highways, regional airfield, a famous University and excellent natural resources.

The city is the largest in the Baixo Vouga Intermunicipal community sub-region.

Aveiro is also known as the “Portuguese Venice”, due to its system of canals of the lagoon Ria de Aveiro, similar to the italian city of Venice.

Famous for its “Moliceiros” – typical fishing boats with gaily painted prows, Aveiro was once a busy and prosperous port town several centuries ago.

Today Aveiro district represents a very important and powerful industrial area, where salt is still extracted, where there are shipyards, mechanical engineering industries, iron industry, cellulose factories, china shops, ceramic and still fishing.
